The Warrior Prince Sourav Ganguly, in ESPN/STAR Sports

The cricket fever doesn’t stop while we are waiting for the mother of all games, Pakistan vs. India, or for the first semi final. No. The cricket fever stays with us, today fueled by a new legend, The Warrior Prince – Sourav Ganguly. The former captain of the India team is still regarded as India’s most successful Captain in modern times. His nicknames The God of the Off Side, The Prince of Calcutta, The Maharaja – are a popular attempt to describe his charisma, allure, and, in the end, success.

Mitali Ghosal started working at a documentary featuring Ganguly in 2008. The idea was to portray this amazing sportsman from a lesser known perspective. While many know Ganguly is a cricket legend, few know how he became a cricketer, and a left-hander:

“Many things in Ganguly’s life are still unknown… How he became a cricketer… And a left-hander… The docu-feature will be peppered with such small but interesting things,” – Ghosal told in an interview back in 2008. “Like an incident in that famous England tour in 1996 when Ganguly made debut Test century. Ganguly was very hurt when the then skipper Mohammed Azharuddin jokingly asked the left hander: ‘Have you done your shopping in England?’”

The documentary, titled The Warrior Prince, will be featured today on ESPN/STAR Sports network. The documentary features other cricket legends, such as Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Steve Waugh and others, testifying about Sourav Ganguly’s career, and about various character traits of India’s former captain. Mumbai University allows PhD guides to conduct entrance exams

MUMBAI: In a decision that will bring cheer to some and raise eyebrows of many others, the Mumbai University has empowered its PhD guides to conduct entrance tests for each candidate registered under them. This is a "special" arrangement for close to 600 students who registered for their doctoral studies when the university was dragging its feet over the mandatory regulations of the University Grants Commission.

In June 2009, the UGC drew up norms that universities across the country would have to follow for registering research fellows: step one was to conduct an entrance test to select students. The idea was to enhance the quality of PhD research in India. But the MU only recently finalized the process for selecting candidates and held an entrance test for those who registered after February.

In the intervening period, the varsity registered close to 600 PhD fellows on the basis of the old guidelines, who did not take any entrance test. "Now, the academic council has decided that not only will the respective guides take the exam, but even the six-month classroom course on research methodology will be conducted by the respective guides. This is a special decision," said BCUD director Rajpal Hande.

This will cheer many candidates who said they had completed a lot of leg-work in their research topic. The list of registered candidates has some prominent names: higher and technical education minister Rajesh Tope has registered under the university's commerce head Vivek Deolankar for his research in management, NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad registered in July 2009 for doctoral work in history and Shiv Sena's Anil Parab, who enrolled in December 2009. Though Tope confirmed that he had registered for the PhD before November 2010, he may not pursue it immediately. "I am busy with the session and other ministry-related work. I will attempt the test when I have the time," Tope said. On the university's decision on allowing the guides to conduct the test, he said the academic council is responsible for making all university related decisions in the best interest of students. "They might have decided some means to retain the quality of the test," added Tope.

Another registered candidate, Deepanshu Pusalkar, said the decision came as a relief to most registered candidates. "As we have completed 70% of our PhD work, it would not have been fair for us to attempt a test at this juncture. There will not be any fear if our guides would conduct the test."

UGC fumes at MU's "special arrangement"

"This is not acceptable with the UGC guidelines of 2009, which warrants that the university must conduct an entrance exam, followed by face-to-face interviews and course work for one or two semesters. This special arrangement is not what we meant while drawing up the guidelines. Such a special arrangement is not provided for in our guidelines," said Ved Prakash, UGC chairman.

Chhavi Rajawat a Sarpanch of a village One, from a distance, could easily mistake Rajawat, computer-savvy woman, an articulate or frontline model or a Bollywood actress. But she is the head(Sarpanch) of a village, village Soda, about 60 kilometres far from Jaipur. Rajawat of 30, is the youngest and only MBA village head in India. This position is mostly occupied by the elders of a village. Chhavi Rajawat is an Indian politician. She is the sarpanch her village Soda, 60 km from Jaipur.

Chhavi Rajawat was born in Rajasthan. She is an alumna of Rishi Valley School, Bangalore,Lady Shri Ram College for Women (University of Delhi) and a management graduate from Indian Institute of Modern Management, Pune now known as Balaji Institute of Modern Management Pune

She left her corporate job and city life to join politics. Her grandfather Brig Raghubir Singh was the sarpanch of the village, from which she too was elected.

A student of Rishi Valley Bangalore and Lady Shriram College, Rajawat topped up her education with a business management degree. She worked with five comapanies in various capacities before changing focus.

But today, as Chhavi heads NREGA meetings in her village dressed in jeans and T-shirt, she is fast emerging as the changing face of rural Rajasthan. "It should change. There is so much one can do," she says.

"In fact, my business management degree is helping me take care of the village better. It is a sort of social work that runs in my blood," says the woman who became sarpanch on February 4.

And it is a change that Chhavi attributes to her grandfather Brig Raghubir Singh. As sarpanch of Soda, years ago, he had made Chhavi's mother drive through the village without a veil. Villagers looked surprised as the car entered but no one uttered a word.

Rajawat says she waded into politics, backed by the villagers. "There was an uprising against the sarpanch. The villagers did not want him and though I was pitched against his wife and another woman, I managed to win. The villagers see me as the daughter of the village and wanted me to contest," she says.

Chhavi Rajawat, the corporate girl-turned-sarpanch from Rajasthan, says she's used to rural life. "I am used to it. I grew up playing with kids of farmers. Besides, my parental house is in Soda, so I spend time there and don't miss anything. I am pretty comfortable," she says. Besides being sarpanch, she also tends to a hotel that the family owns in Jaipur and the numerous horses that are part of her riding school. "It's a passion," she explains.

She's also trying to change mindsets. "Villagers have got used to not working and taking partial payment for NREGA. I have to change that. I go on surprise visits and give them a scolding or two if they are not working," she says. "But my focus is on bringing safe drinking water and increasing job opportunities in the village by involving NGOs," says Rajawat.

Shaadi 3 crore ki, Imagines new enterprise is a big fat Punjabi wedding of Sheenu and Ishu (please dont ask for their real names).

These two blessed people have decided to marry and even as you read this, they have gone through some half a dozen elaborate rasams (read long-drawn rituals where everyone is hugging each other and talking in incomprehensible Punjabi, thank god for subtitles) and a sagai. The girl smiles incessantly when she is not throwing coy glances at Ishu while Ishu is more worried about matching his turban with her lehenga ji! So you have him wearing a purple pagdi to go with her glittering mauve lehenga, and to our horror, they are even sitting on a baingani sofasomeone pass me the lassi, please!

Ok, so whats the show about? Dont know clearly but we guess the channel is sponsoring their shaadi and have magnanimously offered a three crore ka budget (and we thought shows were flopping left, right and centre on Imagine) to both the parties. So now they have to decide how much money they are going to spend on their clothes, jewellery, invitation cards, music, food etc etc. You dont even want to know the petty fights the ladke ke rishtedaar get into asking for their personal budget, the ladki ki mother cribbing they should have got more money than the ladkewalas and what not While the obscene display of wealth gets out of hand, adding to our woes are begani shaadi mein Abdullah deewanas Ali Asgar and Mona Singh. They try hard to make the proceedings lively with their non-stop chatter. Mona dresses in these heavy costumes (someone should get her swayamvar done, come on guys, Imagine hard!) and seems more interested than even the bride.

passport seva kendra bangalore, Passport applicants in Bangalore left high and dry

Angry applicants protested in front of the regional passport office (RPO) in Koramangala and passport seva kendras (PSKs) at Marathahalli and Lalbagh Road when employees struck work nationwide on Tuesday.

Anticipating trouble, police rushed to the RPO and PSKs in the morning to avoid any untoward incident. Although the strike was called off in the afternoon and employees resumed work at 2.30pm, the public had to return home disappointed without applying for or collecting their passports.

As usual, on Tuesday too, people started queuing up in front of the passport office from 5.30 am. Among them were applicants from districts and some foreign nationals too.

They came to know about the strike only around 9.30 am when security guards told them to return to their homes. They were told that All India Passport Office Employees Association had called for a two-day strike.

However, people were not convinced and they went on arguing with striking employees till noon. They said the sudden strike was unjust. They had no clue of the strike as they were waiting for hours at the gate. If it was a nationwide strike, why it was not reported in the media, they asked.

As the public turned the heat on the striking employees, the police tried in vain to persuade them to stop their protest and return peacefully to their homes. Similar scenes were witnessed in front of the passport seva kendra on Lalbagh Road near Urvashi theatre and the centre at Devarabisanahalli in Marathahalli on Outer Ring Road.

Asha Narayana Shetty, a team leader with Monsanto company, who was waiting in front of the passport kendra at Devarabisanahalli, said: “I’d been struggling for 40 days to get a clearance certificate from the passport office for my visa. I had my first appointment on February 10 and the second was on Tuesday. I took leave and came here with great expectation. Then came this big upset.”

“I found the gate of PSK office locked with police, security guards and passport applicants crowding around. One applicant told me that the employees were on strike and they won’t allow us inside.

They did not even allow us to park our vehicles and the police were busy sending visitors back,” Shetty said.

“The passport officials did not answer our questions. Some agents told us the office won’t function tomorrow (Wednesday) also,” she added.

One passport employee said, “We received the message calling for a two-day strike only on Monday night. Around 2 pm today, we got the message to call off the strike. Hence, we resumed duty.”

Earth Hour in India

India joined the Earth Hour movement in 2009, where 5 million Indians across 56 cities showed their support by switching off non essential lights and saving approximately 1000 MW of power in that one hour. Hundreds on educational institutions, 100 top public and private sector organizations, and governments of various cities participated.

With support from all sections of the society, industry and government, Earth Hour in India reached new heights, with 2010 receiving participation from 6 million Indian across 128 cities. 600,000 students from different institutions and cities volunteered to spread the message of earth hour and increase outreach. 120 top private and public organizations participated. Well known buildings in 125 cities, banks, local cafes, official residence of Chief Ministers, nation’s defence institutions like Indian Military Academy switched off in support.

Recognizing the success and impact of the campaign, Earth Hour was nominated for NDTV Greenies Awards 2010. It also bagged the ‘WOW Paradigm of the Year’ award for the best social campaign.

doeacc results 2011 – doeacc o level examination results have been declared, DOEACC results have been declared on the official website of DOEACC. An Autonomous body of Department of information technology handled by Ministry of Communication & Information Technology, Government of India.

DOEACC Society was in implementation of Joint scheme all india council of technical education department of information technology formerly department of electornics (DOE) in the more than 10 states across all over india as its own 10 Centres all over India at Aurangabad, Aizawl, Calicut, Chandigarh, Gorakhpur, Tezpur/Guwahati, Imphal, Kolkata, Jammu/Srinagar & Kohima. The objective of DOEACC is to create quality man power with the computer training institutes.

There are two types of courses offered by DOEACC right now.

1. An IT Literacy course namely, Course on Computer Concepts (CCC) is offered by the Society all over the country
2. The other level of courses are:

O Level – Equivalent to Foundation level course
A Level – Equivalent to Advanced Diploma in Computer Applications
B Level – Equivalent MCA Level
C Level – M. Tech Level

Parliament approves new name for Orissa

New Delhi, March 24 (PTI) Orissa will hereafter be called ''Odisha'' and the Oriya language will be known as ''Odia'' with Parliament giving approval to amendment of the Constitution and also passing the related bill.

The Rajya Sabha passed the Orissa (the Alteration of Name) Bill and adopted the Constitution (113th) Amendment Bill after a brief debate with members from all parties hailing the move as "historic" for people of the state.

Supported by all parties, including the Biju Janta Dal, the Constitution Amendment Bill was adopted by all 169 members present and voting.

Such a bill requires support of at least two-third of members present and voting. Besides, the majority of the strength of the House should be present for voting. The Upper House has a strength of 245 members.

Lok Sabha has already adopted these measures after the Centre received the resolution passed by the state Assembly.

While there was all round support for the measure, BJP and Congress members sought to target Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik charging him with non-performance and heading a government facing scams.

The bills were piloted by Home Minister P Chidambaram. However, the electronic voting system witnessed glitches during the division so much so that even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh''s vote was also cast wrongly.

Participating in the debate, members said the name change was the process of decolonisation as Britishers had changed the Indian names of cities and states.

Pyarimohan Mohapatra (BJD) said it was a "great moment" for people of the state and added that with the change of name, they are getting back their pride.

R C Khuntia (Cong) rued that the state, which was prosperous once, has become poverty-stricken. He, however, hoped the change of name will fulfil aspirations of people.

He said the state was facing many scams and corruption charges in the present rule.

Rudra Narayan Pany (BJP) charged the Orissa Chief Minister with non-performance and said Patnaik could not speak even the local language. His colleague Chandan Mitra said, "Orissa regains its prestige and sense of history."

Mitra said while India''s heritage was revered in many parts of the world, "we have forgotten our own heritage."

There have been many cities and states that have been renamed after independence. These include Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Mumbai (Bombay), Chennai (Madras), Kolkata (Calcutta), Pune (Poona), Kochi (Cochin) and Bangaluru (Banglore).
